It was a sunny, crisp early November morning in Cedar City, Utah. We had used our backyard grill the night before, and when I looked outside, I discovered (unsurprisingly) that I had left the black grill cover on the ground all night. I trudged outside to put it back on. Even though the Fall air chilled me to the bone, as I picked up the cover, I could instantly feel that the morning sun shining on the black material had made the thing genuinely hot. Halloween was fresh in my memory, and I thought: “Huh, maybe that’s why witches always wear black - to keep themselves warm!” That thought became the genesis of Why Do Witches Wear Black?
Over the next few weeks, I started formulating some ideas about a story for kids explaining why witches always wear black. I have three kids, and there are two things I know about a good children’s book (for me anyway): 1) It has to be short; and 2) It helps if it rhymes. So, I set out to write a short rhyming story. After about a year of agonizing over individual words (neon yellow? bright yellow? just yellow?) I felt like it was ready to share with folks other than my wife and kids. Maybe they were just being nice, but the people I shared it with seemed to like it, so I kept going. My sisters (who are much more active on social media than I) informed me that our cousin’s wife, Kathryn Rammell, was a gifted illustrator. I contacted her about doing the illustrations for the book, and the rest (as they say) is history. Her beautiful drawings took the story to the next level, and here we are!
